The practice of giving agricultural workers part of their pay in the form of wine, known as the Dop system, contribute to high levels of alcohol use. This practice has been outlawed. However, the practice continues and heavy drinking persists. A Dop-Stop Association has been formed to inform farm workers of their legal rights. FAS prevention campaigns now target the high-risk agricultural sector.
The Foundation for Alcohol-Related Research and the CDC, in collaboration with the National Health Laboratory Services and the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, are working together to build capacity in case-finding and surveillance, epidemiology, data management and analysis, and FAS prevention in South Africa. The three-year cooperative agreement is known as The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Surveillance and Prevention Project – Republic of South Africa.
