Module 6: Diagnosis and Treatment of FASD
Services for Persons With an FASD
Services for persons with an FASD may include special education, housing,
vocational rehabilitation, and services available through the Indian Health
Service. In addition, some income support may be available through entitlement
programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. To be eligible,
a child must meet both income and disability criteria. Some of the parents'
income and assets may be counted as the child's. This may occur if the child is
under age 18, is unmarried, and lives at home.
Most children who meet SSI eligibility criteria are also eligible for Medicaid.
Developmental disabilities services may be available, depending on how the State
defines developmental disability. The Federal definition is often broader than
State definitions.
Services that may be needed 3 include:
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Speech therapy
- Housing support
- Vocational rehabilitation
- Mental health or substance abuse treatment
- Case management
It is important to tailor services to the special issues presented by prenatal
alcohol exposure. For example, persons with an FASD may be at risk for alcohol
and drug problems. Treatment may fail because they have difficulty processing
information and transferring knowledge into practice if the treatment methodology
does not accommodate those differences.
